Aug 29, 2019 at 2:48 comment added Mark Johnson @PeterM this has nothing to do with the Spanish Inquisition, but with the fulfillment of ones obligation as a citizen. It will not just go away by sticking ones head in the sand. Dealing with it properly now, show his intention of doing so, which will help him later, should something come up later. Remember also that the Ukraine is being bullied by it's big neighbour and is in the middle of a civil war. This is not a situation in where one should act like a Ostrich, but deal with the matter in a responsible mannor.

But then, nobody expects Spanish Inquisition!
Aug 28, 2019 at 14:55 comment added Mark Johnson @PeterM at the moment they don't know he is a UK citizen and thus assume he is a Ukraine citizen. Completing this process should insure that he will have no problems in the future and will be treated soley as a UK citizen. Also it should deal with the National service problem. Often nationals who grow up outside of the home country are exempt. At the moment he may be on some list somewhere with a question mark. This action should deal with this also. Having a certified copy (preferably from the Embassy) is a saveguard in case somewhere within their bureaucracy didn't get informed.
Aug 28, 2019 at 14:39 comment added Peter M. - stands for Monica @MarkJohnson - Interesting. So just to be sure, OP should confirm with Ukrainian Embassy in UK that after becoming UK citizen, OP is no longer considered to be Ukrainian citizen (according to Greg Hewgill answer), or even renounce former Ukrainian citizenship. So Ukrainian authorities cannot "snatch" him/her when visiting Ukraine, OP will be protected as UK citizen.
Aug 28, 2019 at 11:15 comment added Mark Johnson @PeterM if the Ukraine considers a person its citizen, then that citizenship prevails. This is common International law since the 1920's. Contrary advice should be avoided.
Aug 28, 2019 at 1:22 comment added phoog @nopassport1 what steps did you take, if any, to get the passport office to change its tune?
Jun 24, 2019 at 23:39 comment added DavidRecallsMonica If Ukraine does not permit dual citizenship, does it do anything other than revoke Ukranian citizenship of someone who takes citizenship elsewhere? If Ukraine does more (say, endeavors to prosecute those who take other citizenship), then the OP takes a significant risk even entering as a UK citizen.
Jun 19, 2019 at 14:07 comment added Peter M. - stands for Monica @nopassport1 - Sorry for misinformation. If you as UK citizen don't need a visa to enter Ukraine, you are fine. I just wanted to highlight that you should present yourself as 100% UK citizen, don't try to enter Ukraine on your Ukrainian passport (if you still have one).
Jun 19, 2019 at 10:27 comment added nopassport1 @PeterM. I checked online and I cannot find anywhere that says I have to get a visa to enter Ukraine as a British Citizen. Please could you provide a source? Because if that's the case then I will have to apply for a visa ASAP
Jun 18, 2019 at 22:56 comment added Peter M. - stands for Monica @nopassport1 - If you enter Ukraine as UK citizen, they will have no way to prove your original Ukrainian citizenship. You will have to get a visa, as any UK citizen.
Jun 13, 2019 at 9:31 comment added nopassport1 Thanks for your answer. I received notification from HM Passport Office that my application has now been approved and that I will be receiving my passport in a few days. I do not know if I will have problems with entering Ukraine however

Jun 11, 2019 at 21:24 comment added phoog "If you don't intend to travel there and you don't want to keep your Ukrainian citizenship, you probably do not need to do anything else": except if nopassport1 does nothing else, the passport office does not appear to be willing to issue a passport.
